Custom Wedding Invitations DIY

While it may seem daunting to create your own wedding invitations from scratch, the process was actually pretty fun. The ordering process as mentioned in a previous post was the most stressful thing because not many places allow you to upload invitations to be printed. My recommendation would be to use a local shop and save yourself the headache or use Shutterfly. Prior to ordering anything create a template mock up of all the elements of the invitation. For ours, the elements included the base invite, a recipe card, rsvp card, a belly band, glitter ribbon and a sticker. When using multiple pieces it is sometimes hard to envision the full look so make sure not to skip this step. I ended up changing dimensions after creating a mock up since the ones online ended up looking funky when put together.

If I could do the process over again I think I would do a pocket folder style invite because it helps things stay organized.  At the end of the day though the invitations are for you not your guests. Yes, guests need the information but the overall look of them will honestly only be important to the bride. I created every element on Canva.com and even ended up printing out the recipe and rsvp cards on my own. Try printing items that do not require a lot of ink on a printer at home to save money. We saved over $130 by printing items at home rather than having them done at a professional shop. Another thing I used to ease the process was my Cricut Explore Air II machine to cut each rsvp card to size or cut them by hand while watching a movie. My favorite thing had to be the silver glitter ribbon. I wish that Cupcakes and Cashmere would still sell this, it does not shed at all! I love glitter but I hate when it gets all over everything.

One of the main pieces of advice would be to create in batches. For instance, print all the recipe cards, then cut them before printing the RSVP cards and so on. Another little tip, do not purchase belly bands online, make them yourself! Buy some tracing paper or use some from the craft closet. Cutting them down to size is fast and easy; just use a paper cutter like the Cricut one I use in the video below. Share with me your wedding invitation creations or ideas, I’d love to see!

XOXO Faith
