Convert a PNG to an SVG & Make an Easy Peel Sticker with the Cricut

How to: Convert a PNG to an SVG

Although SVG files are a bit daunting at first, they do make the designing process easier. The main benefit of using a SVG over a PNG is that you can alter the colors of the image in design space. While several programs and classes are on the market today to learn how to create an SVG file there is also a free resource out there www.pngtosvg.com. No downloading software or paying for classes: this site instantly creates the SVG for you. That being said it is not a perfect program so the image may need to be tweaked like mine in the tutorial below once it is uploaded into design space.

Easy Peel Stickers

What is an easy peel sticker? It is a kiss-cut die-cut sticker. Getting the machine to create this is a bit of a learning curve since you’re requesting that the machine cut through only the top layer around the first outline of the sticker and then through both layers of the second outline. Two outlines allow for an easy peel experience rather than bending or ripping the sticker trying to remove the backing. I have included a bullet point list of simplified instructions as well as a video tutorial to show the entire process. The cut setting used is called sticky note, however, the results will vary depending on the type of sticker paper used.

  1. Upload PNG or SVG file into Design Space
  2. Create an Offset of the Image (the size of the sticker itself)
  3. Create an Offset of the Offset that is a bit Larger (make this one black)
  4. Select, Align, Center & Flatten the Image Layer and the First Offset Layer
  5. Duplicate the black offset 2x’s
  6. Select, Align, Center & Attach the three black offsets
  7. Select all Layers & Attach

Please let me know your sticker hacks and what kind of sticker designs you are making?
